Capsized whale-watch boat had undergone major modifications

Mv Leviathan Ii Jamies Whaling Station

(TOFINO, British Columbia) — The whale-watching boat that capsized off the coast Sunday, killing six passengers, had undergone major modifications that may have caused it to become less stable, CBC News reported. Leviathan II was built by Vancouver-based RivTow Industries in 1981 as a tugboat, then was converted in 1996 with the addition of a top deck. Capt. Ivan Oxford, a nautical training instructor, told CBC that such a redesign raises concerns about stability.
