SHIPS Act aims to bolster shipbuilding, mariners and tradespeople

The battleship Washington (BB-47) was launched from the New York Shipbuilding Corporation shipyard, in Camden, N.J., in 1921. The Shipping Act of 1916 accelerated the pace of American shipbuilding so that by the early 1920s, the U.S. had one of the largest merchant fleets in the world. Shipbuilding in the United States has, however, been in steady decline. The SHIPS for America Act aims to increase the number of U.S.-flagged vessels from around 80 to 250.
