The Galveston, Texas-based dredging and marine construction company Callan Marine has taken delivery of its new suction dredge General Marshall. The 194-foot vessel was built by DSC Dredge LLC of Reserve, La.
The dredger, named for the late General of the Army and Secretary of State, George C. Marshall, is the seventh dredge to join Callan Marine’s fleet and is the result of a collaborative design effort between DSC and Callan.
The General Marshall features advanced production automation and monitoring systems, and “is capable of dredging a wide variety of projects in both deep water and shallow water,” according to Troy Trahan, Callan’s manager of capital expenditures.
The vessel’s tanks and superstructure modules were fabricated at DSC’s Poplarville, Ms., manufacturing facility. “Once the vessel had been completed and tested, DSC disassembled it and shipped it piece by piece via truck to the Kennedy construction yard in Galveston, Texas, where the final assembly took place,” said Trahan.
With an 18-inch suction and discharge diameter, General Marshall is equipped with an 18-inch dredge pipe and a 300 hp cutter, while total installed power of more than 3,000 hp enables the dredger to operate in depths of up to 60 feet.
According to Trahan, a survey office, storage room and crew break room, along with captain and chief engineer office space, to the original design of the dredge,” Trahan said.
The new diesel-electric vessel is the third DSC-built dredge in Callan’s fleet, joining the 12-inch cutter suction dredge (CSD) General Eisenhower and the 8-inch cutter suction dredge General Swing. Other dredges in the company’s fleet include the 32-inch General MacArthur; the 28-inch General Bradley; the 18-inch General Pershing; and the 16-inch General Patton.
An eighth dredger, the 32-inch CSD General Arnold, is slated for delivery in Q4 of this year.
“The General Marshall is the seventh dredge to join the Callan Marine fleet, with General Arnold on the horizon,” said John Sullivan, CEO and managing principal at Callan Marine, at the ceremony celebrating the dredge’s delivery. “Our commitment to the dredging industry continues to grow, and by expanding our fleet assets, we stand ready to respond to the needs of our coastal waterways.”
