Campbell Transportation Company Inc. has held a renaming ceremony in Galveston, Tx., for M/V Linda Hughes Farley, one of its newest towboats.

The boat was renamed to honor the wife of Jim Farley, who serves as a member of Campbell Transportation’s Board of Directors and is a past chairman of the American Waterways Operators.

It recently underwent a mid-period maintenance overhaul at the Main Iron Works facility in Houma, La.

Linda Hughes Farley was originally built as the M/V Julian Cenac by Main Iron Works in 2020.

Cenac Marine Services initially operated the boat prior to its being acquired in 2021 by Pittsburgh, Pa.-headquartered Campbell.

The 3,000 hp, triple-screw towboat measures just over 90 feet by 34 feet, with a molded depth of 10.8 feet, and is powered by a trio of Caterpillar C32 main engines, each of which produce 1,000 hp. with Twin Disc MGX5321 gearboxes.

M/V Linda Hughes Farley is one of 25 vessels in Campbell’s Gulf Coast towing fleet and operates as part of the company’s liquid towing fleet transporting tank barges primarily along the Gulf Coast and the Lower Mississippi River.

The renaming of M/V Linda Hughes Farley coincides with the announcement that Campbell Transportation has repowered its 150-foot, triple-screw M/V Louise S with a new Mitsubishi propulsion system.

“We replaced the vessel’s previous engines with more efficient Tier 3, S16R Mitsubishi engines,” said Capt. Michael Pilgrim, Campbell’s director of maintenance.

“Since the Louise S has returned to service, the numbers indicate significant fuel savings and noticeable performance improvement and we are extremely pleased with the results we are currently seeing,” he said.

The M/V Louise S was previously powered by three EMD 12-645 engines. The new Tier 3 Mitsubishi S16R-Y3 engines, were provided by Laborde Products.

Each of the new engines generate 1,675 hp, bringing the total vessel power to 5,025 hp and “significantly enhancing the boat’s capability and efficiency, Laborde Products said.

The renaming of the M/V Linda Hughes Farley also follows the recent grand opening of Campbell Transportation’s new southern base of operations at Four Oaks Place in the Uptown area of Houston.

The new office serves as Campbell’s Gulf Coast and liquid tank barge business HQ, and expands the company’s footprint in the region following its April 2022 acquisition of Houston-based E Squared Marine Service.
