Army Corps: Lock repairs will close Illinois River for a week

(CHICAGO) — The upper portion of the Chicago River will be commercially unnavigable this week while repairs are made to the Marseilles Lock and Dam, Reuters news service reported. The Army Corps of Engineers said river levels need to be lowered to below the nine-foot draft while the crews tend to the damaged lock system, which required an emergency response last month after runaway barges rammed into it. The Coast Guard was in the process of ensuring that all barges and other vessels were removed from the area.
