(SEATTLE) — Markey Machine on Friday announced the passing of Brandon Durar, a respected figure in the maritime industry and a dedicated leader whose career spanned more than four decades. Durar died on Sunday, June 21, at the age of 71.
Durar built his career through hard work, persistence, and a practical understanding of marine deck equipment. He supported operators who depended on reliable systems every day, and his work reached tugboats, salvage vessels, dredges, research ships, and commercial vessels around the world.
Durar entered the maritime industry in 1980 with Almon A. Johnson (AAJ), a marine deck equipment manufacturer. Hired as a designer and draftsman, he became involved in the design and installation of towing and traction winch systems for the U.S. Navy’s ARS-50 rescue and salvage vessels. He later became chief engineer and general manager, helping guide the company’s growth while earning a reputation as a steady, knowledgeable, and practical problem solver.

His support of U.S. Navy salvage vessels became a defining part of his career. Durar remained closely connected to naval operations, providing engineering expertise and technical support for demanding marine applications where deck machinery had to perform dependably.
In 2000, he founded JonRie InterTech, naming the company after his children, John and Marie. What began as a small independent business grew into a respected name in marine deck equipment, built through long hours, customer service, and a commitment to dependable products.
His approach was straightforward: Listen to operators, understand how equipment was used in real working conditions, and deliver practical solutions that made vessels safer, more efficient, and easier to operate.
As president of JonRie, Durar competed in a specialized market dominated by long-established manufacturers. Through determination, responsiveness, and a deep knowledge of the work, JonRie earned the trust of operators and shipyards looking for complete, reliable solutions.
In 2023, JonRie joined forces with Markey Machine, bringing together two respected marine equipment companies. Durar served as president of the JonRie Division of Markey Machine, helping guide the transition while continuing to support customers and share his experience with younger engineers and industry newcomers.
Those who worked alongside Durar often noted his dedication to the industry and his willingness to teach. Whether discussing winch systems, vessel safety, naval architecture, or day-to-day operations, he was generous with his time and eager to help others succeed.
Outside work, Durar was known for his enthusiasm for racing and motorsports. A lifelong NASCAR and Formula 1 fan, he enjoyed the competition, engineering, and performance that connected the racetrack to the waterfront.
Durar’s legacy lives on in the equipment he helped bring to market, the vessels he supported, and the people who learned from him. His work ethic, leadership, and commitment to customers left a lasting mark on the maritime community.
The maritime industry is better because of Brandon Durar. He will be remembered for his dedication, perseverance, mentorship, and decades of service to the people and companies he supported.
