Without aid, Aker Philadelphia Shipyard to close by July 2011

(PHILADELPHIA) — Aker Philadelphia Shipyard will close by July 2011 unless new state aid and private financing is lined up, the Philadelphia Inquirer newspaper reported. The shipyard will finish a tanker in May and has no new orders. Gov. Ed Rendell is attempting to win approval for an aid package that would allow the yard to build two new tankers even though no buyer is ordering them.
