Wisconsin proposes own tough ballast-water rules on salties

(SUPERIOR, Wis.) — The Lake Carriers’ Association is protesting a proposal in the state of Wisconsin to place new ballast-water restrictions on oceangoing vessels, Minnesota Public Radio reported. The proposed rules would be much tougher than Minnesota’s, worrying operators at Superior, Wis., who fear the port’s grain-shipping business could be lost to another state or Canada. The lake carriers don’t want different standards in different states and are hoping the federal government will step in to formulate one universal standard.
