Weak economy turns U.S. waters into vessel ‘dumping grounds’

(NEW YORK) — Abandoned vessels are becoming a more pronounced environmental problem during the economic downturn, Scientific American magazine reported. More than 200 vessels have been dumped in New York’s Jamaica Bay alone, and Florida officials have reported an increase in vessels abandoned by people who no longer afford them. The vessels leak oil and biocides and kill sea grass.
