(WASHINGTON) — The Navy's littoral combat ship USS Montgomery (LCS 8) struck a wall in the Panama Canal while transiting from the Atlantic to Pacific Ocean, causing a hull fracture eight to 10 feet above the waterline, the U.S. Naval Institute reported. The incident did not delay the newly delivered vessel's transit to its home port in San Diego. The Oct. 29 incident in the Panama Canal is the latest challenge for the combat vessel, which sustained two engineering problems in September and was hit by a tugboat last month in waters off Florida. Austal USA built the vessel at its Mobile, Ala., shipyard.
