Two killed when tug sinks off Newfoundland

(ST. JOHN’S, Newfoundland) — Two mariners died after their tugboat Check-Mate III sank in the Atlantic Ocean, the Globe and Mail newspaper reported. The vessel was en route from Newfoundland to Halifax when the accident happened. Water may have been leaking into the men’s survival suits, and their families have criticized Coast Guard rescuers for allegedly not getting them out of the water fast enough.
