Tugs, fireboats protect Navy ship from blaze at Md. pier (PHOTO)

(SOLOMONS, Md.) — A 180-foot Navy training ship narrowly avoided major damage from a raging pier fire along the Patuxent River, Southern Maryland Newspapers reported on its Web site. The flames spread to two rooms near the bow of the naval vessel before other boats arrived to help fight the fire. The 720-foot industrial pier was heavily damaged.
