Trudeau makes Coast Guard fleet revitalization 'top priority'

(OTTAWA) — Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has placed revitalization of the Canadian Coast Guard fleet among his Cabinet's top priorities, CBC News reported. In a mandate letter to Hunter Tootoo, minister of Fisheries, Oceans and the Canadian Coast Guard, Trudeau urges him to "meet the commitments that were made for new Coast Guard vessels as part of the National Shipbuilding Procurement Strategy." The $40 billion strategy is one of the largest capital projects ever announced by the Canadian government, but it has yet to produce a vessel since being enacted five years ago.
