Tow strikes Mississippi River bridge; 12 barges break loose

(HANNIBAL, Mo.) — Twelve barges broke loose in the Mississippi River after the tow struck a railroad bridge, the Quincy Herald-Whig newspaper reported. An American Commercial Lines towboat was transporting the barges when three of them struck pillars of the Mark Twain Memorial Bridge. The riverboat Mark Twain had to maneuver away from the wayward vessels to keep from getting hit, and Canton Marine Towing helped to round them up.
