Testimony: DRD Towing routinely subbed apprentices for masters

(NEW ORLEANS) — Port captains for DRD Towing testified that the company routinely used apprentice mates when they were short of towing vessel masters, the Times-Picayune newspaper reported. Company officials had discussed the possibility that the practice could get them in trouble sometime. The testimony was given at a Coast Guard hearing into the July collision and oil spill that closed the Mississippi River at New Orleans.
