Sunken barge refloated on intracoastal waterway

The following is the text of a news release from the U.S. Coast Guard:

(HOUSTON) — The Gulf Intracoastal Waterway is opened to all traffic near Galveston after a sunken barge east of the Galveston Causeway railroad bridge was refloated Tuesday evening.

The tugboat Brown Water VIII towed the dredge barge to the Kodiak scrap yard in Dickinson for salvage at about 4:40 p.m.

(HOUSTON) — The Coast Guard issued a safety zone and temporarily restricted traffic on the Gulf Intracoastal Waterway after a barge sank east of the Galveston Causeway railroad bridge Tuesday.

The restriction allows one-way and single-wide barges only, from mile marker 356 to mile marker 357.

The owner has contracted T&T Salvage to remove the barge, which was being towed to be scrapped when it sank.
