Study: New Calif. shipping routes meant to protect blue whales threaten other whales

(LA JOLLA, Calif.) — New Southern California shipping lanes designed to protect blue whales may pose a greater threat to humpback and fin whales, the Daily Breeze newspaper reported. Scientists propose adjusting the Los Angeles and Long Beach shipping lanes again to find a midway route that would provide maximum protection for all of the whales. The new shipping lanes proposed in 2009 — partly due to vessel opertors' habits while attempting to avoid low-sulfur-fuel zones — have resulted in some of the highest rates of ship-strike whale deaths in years.
