Soot-emitting tugs, freighters may harm Great Lakes air quality

(MUSKEGON, Mich.) — As a government study revealed that commercial ships spew twice as much air pollution as previously believed, there is concern that vessels are harming the air quality in the Great Lakes, the Muskegon Chronicle newspaper reported. Some Great Lakes communities, including Ottawa County, violate federal air-quality standards for soot. Tugboats are one source of the black-carbon material, but the Lake Carriers Association says Great Lakes tugs don’t emit as much soot as oceangoing tugs.
