(BREMERHAVEN, Germany) — Scientists in Europe are planning to build the world’s first icebreaking ship that is also a driller, the research Web site Science Daily reported. The project is expected to generate controversy, because Russia is a partner and the vessel will explore polar regions where territorial claims are in dispute. Backers say there will be a need to clarify who would be responsible if there is an oil spill in the Arctic, and they do not yet know where the ship’s homeport will be.
