Runaway barges strike Braddock Dam in Monongahela River

(BRADDOCK, Pa.) — Two runaway barges struck the Braddock Dam, causing the Army Corps of Engineers to close the lock temporarily, the Pittsburgh Tribune Review newspaper reported. The barges were full of limestone and were headed downstream in the Monongahela River. The operator, from Tow Line River Service, intentionally ran three other barges aground so they wouldn’t also strike the dam.
