Recession hurting New York’s tugboat crews, pilots (PHOTOS)

(STATEN ISLAND, N.Y.) — Tugboat operators and crews and the Sandy Hook Pilots have experienced a slowdown in demand in New York Harbor, the Staten Island Advance newspaper reported. The number of containerships and car carriers calling in the region has declined because of the recession. Tugboats are idle because it’s cheaper to hire vessels from out-of-state.
