Recent Arctic Ocean events show navigation opportunity, peril

(PRUDHOE BAY, Alaska) — A pair of unrelated events last week illustrate the risks and opportunities presented by commercial navigation in the Arctic, the Anchorage Daily News newspaper reported. A cruise-ship passenger needed to be medically evacuated by a Prudhoe Bay pollution-response vessel. Two German cargo ships carrying heavy equipment sailed through the Arctic — a huge shortcut compared to the usual Asia-to-Europe routes.
