Port Authority may set aside $1B for Bayonne Bridge fix (PHOTO)

(BAYONNE, N.J.) — The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey is prepared to pay $1 billion to solve the Bayonne Bridge’s draft problem, the Jersey Journal newspaper reported. The span is currently too low to accommodate the largest oceangoing ships that would want to use the New York Container Terminal at Howland Hook, Staten Island, N.Y. The Port Authority may fund a plan to jack up the bridge to a draft of 215 feet versus the current draft of 151 to 156 feet.
