Pilots say Mississippi River shoals threaten maritime commerce

(NEW ORLEANS) — The Associated Branch Pilots say the Mississippi River is shoaling and the channel is becoming narrow, television station WGNO reported. Shippers are getting concerned that the Army Corps has cut back on dredging because of budget constraints. The pilots say the channel has lost a foot of draft, and the channel is half as wide as it should be in some spots.
