Pilot: El Faro captain planned to bypass storm to the south

(JACKSONVILLE, Fla.) — The pilot who had guided El Faro on its outbound voyage from Florida testified that the ship's captain planned to bypass the strengthening storm, Reuters reported. Testifying at a U.S. Coast Guard hearing, the pilot said the captain told him he would "shoot under" the impending hurricane. He and a docking pilot testified that the ship was operating normally without any mechanical issues, with the docking pilot stating that the ship was "like a Cadillac."
