The following is the text of a press release issued by the U.S. Coast Guard:
(PORT CANAVERAL, Fla.) — Coast Guard Marine Safety Detachment Canaveral was notified by the National Response Center in Washington, D.C., Wednesday at 3:10 p.m. that an oil spill occurred in Port Canaveral.
Approximately 10 U.S. petroleum barrels spilled during a commercial ship to barge transfer at the North Cargo Pier in Port Canaveral; some of which entered the water causing an oil sheen. A U.S. petroleum barrel contains 42 gallons of petroleum.
A vessel and facility response plan was implemented and cleanup procedures commenced immediately. At this time, the spill has been contained. Containment boom, absorbent material and vacuum skimmers have been deployed.
The spill has caused no impact to shipping, recreational boating or to the channel. A Unified Command has been established at Coast Guard Marine Safety Detachment Canaveral.
The cause of the spill is under investigation by the Coast Guard.
