NJ Senate: Make Bayonne Bridge higher to accommodate ships

(BAYONNE, N.J.) — The New Jersey Senate has called on the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey to raise the Bayonne Bridge higher so that larger ships can call at the ports, the Jersey Journal newspaper of Jersey City reported. The Senate passed a measure calling for a study that will result in a solution, in hope that federal transportation funding would pay for it. Local officials worry that the newest containerships will switch to other East Coast ports if they can’t fit under the bridge over the Kill Van Kull.
