Newspaper editorial: Columbia, Snake rivers demonstrate value

(PASCO, Wash.) — The upcoming 14-week closure of the Columbia and Snake rivers will illustrate the value of the rivers and their barge industries, the Tri-City Herald newspaper wrote in an editorial. The rivers will be shuttered to commercial traffic while locks are receiving crucial repairs and upgrades paid for by federal stimulus money. Grain and fuel will be temporarily transported by rail and truck, and bottlenecks are expected.
