New York cites bulker for Earth Day oil discharge

(ALBANY, N.Y.) — New York's Department of Environmental Conservation is charging the operators of a foreign-flagged bulk carrier with dumping oil into the Hudson River on Earth Day, the Times Union reported. Officials say the crew of South Wind, a 538-foot vessel flagged in the Marshall Islands, poured at least 20 gallons of spilled oil into drain ports on deck, which then discharged into the river at Rensselaer. The captain of the ship said a buildup of pressure from the engine’s waste oil tanks backed up through the vent pipes and caused oil to spill onto the deck.
