New electric anchor windlass available from Markey Machinery

(SEATTLE, WA — October 29, 2007) Markey Machinery, a Seattle-based designer serving professional mariners with custom deck machinery, has custom designed and manufactured an anchor windlass for use aboard the drill ship Joides Resolution. The Markey Type WES-32 Electric Anchor Windlass is being installed as part of infrastructure upgrades to the vessel as it undergoes a major overhaul and conversion in a Singapore yard.

The windlass features double-clutched and -braked wildcats with auxiliary double warping heads symmetrically laid out on either side of the speed reducer. The five-pocket wildcats are designed for two-inch, grade 3, stud link anchor chain. A single 60-hp electric motor with close-coupled failsafe brake gives the wildcat its 52,000 lbs. load and 30 fpm speed rating when operated in low range. When operated in high range, the two-speed motor enables the 24-inch diameter heads to retrieve lines at speeds of 60 feet per minute. Manual band type friction brakes with hand wheel operators carry 190,800 lbs. minimum ratings.

The custom windlass was supplied with two 5-push button operators stations mounted in a stainless steel enclosure rated to NEMA-4X for on deck and wheelhouse mounting.  An across the line type motor starter housed in a NEMA-12 rated enclosure will be installed below decks. With it’s ABS-reviewed design and marine-grade paint system, Markey’s WES-32 Electric Anchor Windlass is suitable for long term service on a variety of ocean going vessels that require reliable deck machinery.
