Navy begins search for sunken El Faro

(WASHINGTON) — A U.S. Navy search-and-rescue vessel headed for the Bahamas on Monday afternoon to search for the wreck of El Faro, the TOTE Maritime cargo ship that sank earlier this month with 33 crewmembers aboard, Reuters reported. The 226-foot Apache is equipped with a hydrophone that can detect pulses emitted by El Faro's voyage data recorder, which has a battery life of 30 days. The search area is 100 square miles of ocean up to 15,000 feet deep just off Crooked Island in the southern Bahamas.
