Microphones on buoys may help ships avoid whale strikes

(OFF CAPE COD) — A research ship is using a network of microphones on buoys to track the location of endangered whales, the Associated Press reported. Scientists and shipping industry groups hope the listening devices will help vessels avoid striking and killing whales. The Chamber of Shipping says such a real-time listening system is preferable to vessel speed limits.
