Lack of skilled mariners delays debut of BC Ferries vessel

(POWELL RIVER, British Columbia) — The newest BC Ferries vessel won’t begin service until October because the agency is experiencing a shortage of trained crew, the Powell River Peak newspaper reported. The Island Sky was scheduled to enter service in early June on the Saltery Bay-Earls Cove route. Now BC Ferries says it doesn’t have the resources to train a crew by this summer. The new ferry, with a capacity of 125 cars and 600 passengers, is being delivered from Vancouver Shipyards.
