Merchant marine academy cadets learn anti-piracy best practices

(BUZZARDS BAY, Mass.) — Following the Maersk Alabama edisode, merchant marine academy cadets are receiving instruction on thwarting pirate attacks, the Christian Science Monitor newspaper reported. The industry’s best practices focus mainly on preventing the pirates from boarding the vessel. Most companies are not recommending arming merchant mariners or instructing crew to fight the pirates once they’re aboard.
