(HONOLULU) — The U.S. Maritime Administration has acquired both of the former Hawaii Superferries in an auction, television station KITV reported. MarAd was a motivated purchaser because it was out $140 million in loan guarantees from their construction. The Alakai and Huakai will be docked in Virginia until MarAd can find a suitable long-term use for the vessels, which had been activated for Haiti earthquake relief duty.
