Lockheed, Austal unscathed in Hagel’s new littoral ship plan

(WASHINGTON) — A new strategy by Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel calls for the Navy to buy 20 modified littoral combat ships, good news for shipbuilders Lockheed Martin and Austal, Bloomberg News reported. Hagel cut the LCS program from 52 ships to 32 ships in January amid criticism of the lightly armed ships. Instead of further cuts, he announced Thursday that he had opted for vessel modifications to upgrade the program.
