Last coal-fired steamship on Great Lakes may have sailed it last voyage

(LUDINGTON, Mich.) — The last coal-fired steamship on the Great Lakes may have sailed its last voyage, the Ludington Daily News newspaper reported. The ferry SS Badger dumps tons of coal ash slurry into the water and needs a federal permit extension to continue to operate. The vessel's captain says the permit is still being worked by operator Lake Michigan Carferry on as it ties up for the 2012 season and looks toward an uncertain 2013 season.
