Laker operators, environmentalists clash over EPA emissions rules

(BUFFALO, N.Y.) — Great Lakes ship operators say propopsed federal emissions standards are unfair and would cause many lakers to be scrapped, the Buffalo News reported. The lakes’ 13 largest U.S.-flagged steamships are at least 49 years old, refitting them to burn cleaner fuel would be difficult and costly. Operators warn that business would be lost to railroads and trucks.
