La. officials eye closure of Atchafalaya River ferry (PHOTO)

(MELVILLE, La.) — The Melville Ferry will close for three weeks for repairs, the Daily World newspaper reported. When it does reopen, the ferry’s long-term future will be in doubt because the state government is considering eliminating funding for the tug-and-barge combination that crosses the Atchafalaya River. The governor’s office say closing the ferry would save taxpayers $213,000 a year.
