(KONGSBERG, Norway) — Kongsberg Maritime has successfully completed a project to supply a new Horizon Marine CCTV System upgrade for USNS Zeus. The new system replaces the first large vessel CCTV system supplied by Kongsberg Maritime, originally delivered to USNS Zeus in 2002.

The new Kongsberg Maritime CCTV systems replace the original ships' CCTV systems and will be used to monitor critical processes both above and below deck.

The system also incorporates 29 high-speed PTZ dome cameras.

The CCTV system has been fully upgraded in two phases culminating in final delivery in November 2014. The Kongsberg Horizon CCTV range is a scalable harsh environment marine platform that incorporates a combination of high quality in-house design with modified off the shelf (MOTS) video camera stations, telemetry and control components.

Engineered to withstand harsh exposed marine environments, many system components also comply with the highest military level specifications for shock, vibration, EMI, temperature and humidity.

The system deployed on USNS Zeus comprises a range of marine grade camera stations including 10 above deck PTZ (pan, tilt and zoom) IR color cameras with integrated IR LED lighting. These cameras utilize a high-resolution low light color/mono sensor with 28 x optical zoom (12 x digital) and feature an integrated wiper system.

The system also incorporates 29 high-speed PTZ dome cameras suitable for above/below deck operation with a high-resolution color/mono sensor and 36 x optical zoom.

High-quality images are distributed via a large video matrix and full control of all the cameras is made available at telemetry keyboards with three axis joystick control.

The upgraded Kongsberg Maritime CCTV system will provide improved video image quality, more flexible control, power conditioning, viewing, recording options and maximum durability for operating in some of the most hostile marine conditions.

In tandem with CCTV works and as part of the major system upgrade of USNS Zeus, Kongsberg Underwater Technology Inc. was also responsible for delivery, installation and commissioning of a dual high precision acoustic positioning system (HiPAP), an EM122 multibeam echosounder and an EA600 single beam echosounder as part of a "full picture" solution from Kongsberg Maritime.

USNS Zeus is operated by the Military Sealift Command, part of the U.S. Transportation Command and the operator of the majority of the U.S. Navy's replenishment, transport and auxiliary ships. Kongsberg Maritime has worked closely with MSC from before the initial installation in 2002 and throughout the subsequent system upgrades and modifications. Philip Graham, project manager, Camera Division at Kongsberg Maritime, comments, "We believe we have succeeded in delivering a high-quality CCTV upgrade solution fit for the harshest of environments. This, however, was only achieved and obstacles overcome due to good communication and the continuous excellent relationship with our client. We are delighted to be part of the collaborative full picture delivery to this longstanding Kongsberg Maritime customer."

In addition, the Kongsberg Maritime Camera Division has a long-lasting cooperation with the U.S. Navy, with systems installed on many of its vessels, with ongoing service and maintenance support agreements in place.
