(OTTAWA) — Irving Shipbuilding has proposed converting a commercial roll-on, roll-off cargo ship into a vessel that the government could use for humanitarian relief missions or as an oil replenishment tanker for the Royal Canadian Navy, the Herald News reported. The proposal would cost the government $300 million for the conversion, a 30-person civilian crew, maintenance and a five-year lease. The news comes a day after Quebec’s Davie Shipbuilding cut steel on a $700 million conversion of a containership into a potential auxiliary oiler for the navy.
