Gulf oil spill triggers new round of Jones Act controversies

(ATLANTA) — The Gulf of Mexico oil spill response has fueled a new round of debate over the Jones Act, the Christian Science Monitor newspaper reported via Yahoo! News. The Coast Guard initially declined vessel offers from foreign countries but now says it welcomes the friendly aid. Members of Congress have begun discussing waiving requirements that coastwise vessels must be U.S.-flagged.
