Fla. officials do not recommend changes to harbor pilot oversight

(MELBOURNE, Fla.) — A state report that examined the regulation of harbor pilots does not recommend major changes, the Florida Today newspaper reported. That’s bad news for ship operators who had called for a liberalization of the rules governing who can guide ships into port, in order to reduce rates. The report did note that the two boards that oversee pilots have vacancies and expired terms that could reduce the expertise of the boards.
