Fireworks barge’s tug, captain operated with expired documents

(STURGEON BAY, Wis.) — A tugboat being used to transport a fireworks barge — and its captain — were operating with expired paperwork, the Door County Advocate newspaper reported. The Coast Guard said the Death’s Door Marine tugboat had outdated inspection records, and the captain’s Coast Guard merchant mariner license had expired. The investigation started after a small diesel fuel spill when a fireworks worker accidentally flippped a bilge switch.
