(NEW YORK) — Samson, a worldwide leader in high-performance cordage, has announced that one of its own has been honored as a leader in the construction industry. Michael Quinn, director of new business development, was honored as one of Engineering News-Record’s (ENR) Top 25 Newsmakers at the 50th ENR Award of Excellence Gala on April 16 in New York City.
According to ENR.com, Engineering News-Record’s annual Top 25 Newsmakers program recognizes outstanding achievements. The construction industry is full of excellent leadership, but the public rarely sees it in action, even if they do utilize the benefits. There are no nominations or application fees. The editors review the news and select leaders who stand out. These are the industry professionals who have made a difference for their industry and the public over the past year. While many of them worked within teams, some of them worked as individuals. They have been chosen for their outstanding accomplishments, for exceeding expectations, for injecting an original idea or new approach that would take the place of traditional practices, or for performing some special service that benefits the industry and the public.
Quinn was selected for his contribution to the crane industry with the development of KZ-100 — the world’s first synthetic hoist line developed specifically for use on mobile cranes. “I am honored to be recognized by ENR for the work done on this project,” said Quinn. “No one person could have made this happen on their own. A special thanks to the Samson team and our partners, Manitowoc and DSM, for their continued support to bring this innovative product to the market.”
KZ-100 utilizes high-performance synthetic fibers to make a hoist rope with similar strength to traditional wire with more than an 80% reduction in weight. The list of improvements for the lifting industry is lengthy; including faster reeving, quicker installation and set-up, safer handling, less weight below the boom allowing for more hauling weight, and a torque-neutral construction.
As reported by ENR, Mike Herbert, global product director for rough-terrain cranes at Manitowoc, says the synthetic material improves performance, even on the ground. “It met all of our expectations and every customer that used it in normal crane operations was excited about it,” said Herbert.
