Diplomatic battle brewing over Northwest Passage shipping

(OTTAWA) — While Canada claims sovereignty over the Northwest Passage, other maritime nations including the U.S. don’t recognize such a claim, the Canadian foreign affairs magazine Embassy reported. Canada is seeking to regulate new shipping traffic in the region by sending more Coast Guard personnel and establishing anti-pollution and search-and-rescue capabilities. Canada is funding a commercial harbor at Pangnirtung, Nunavut.
