Defense secretary orders reduction in LCS program

(WASHINGTON) — Defense Secretary Ash Carter has directed the U.S. Navy to cut its littoral combat ship (LCS) procurement to 40 vessels from 52 and to choose only one shipyard to supply them, Defense News reported. Ash's directive also orders the Navy to buy only one ship annually over the next four years, down from three per year. The LCS program features the Freedom class built by Marinette Marine in Wisconsin and the Independence class built by Austal USA in Alabama.
