Corps of Engineers plans to expand Port of Nome

(WASHINGTON) — The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers is planning to develop Nome as a deepwater port, Alaska Dispatch News reported. The Corps is preparing to release a study that suggests expanding the port as a first step in improving infrastructure along Alaska's west and north coasts. A Corps spokesman said growing resource extraction in the Arctic points to the need for deepwater ports in the region, starting with Nome.
