Columnist: New Soo Lock may be a tough sell for Army Corps

(SAULT STE. MARIE, Mich.) — A columnist in the Detroit Free Press newspaper said the proposed additional Soo Lock does not currently qualify for federal funding through the Army Corps of Engineers. According to current calculations, the estimated $580 million project would be a net money loser. But the Obama adminstration is working on changing the formula that the government uses, and the new calculation may take into account the uniqueness of Great Lakes shipping needs.
