Columbia Coastal ends short-sea service between Boston and N.J.

(LIBERTY CORNER, N.J.) — Columbia Coastal Transport has ended its coastwise container service between Boston and Elizabeth, N.J., the Journal of Commerce reported. A company executive said demand for the short-sea service in that corridor had declined sharply. The announcement casts doubt on the federal government’s plan to fund more “marine highway” intitiatives, including a proposal to extend the Boston service to Portland, Maine.
